The use of entheogens such as Ayahuasca has become something of a tourist experience, something new to try with friends or a way to isolate you from your everyday life. But there is a rich history and cultural context that is associated with this drug. Ayahuasca is a drink that is used in spiritual rituals in an effort to connect with one’s self or ancestors that may be out of reach. To better understand the context of ayahuasca, both secular and religious, we will look at how this drug is utilized in its native context, the Andean jungle and Amazon as well as how it has travelled to various locations to be used in a variety of ways.
